He caught the pirate. He did the right thing. He'll regret it.

Captain of the Temple Police is not an easy job. Gerard wasn't expecting it to be easy...but he also didn't expect to have to fight off the Priestess's overtures at every turn. While he isn't against killing, torture seems dishonorable, and a visit to the dungeons leaves Gerard feeling more than a little sympathy for the pirates he has been ordered to capture.

Nevertheless, if he's to protect his gentle, talented wife, Gerard must do his job and eliminate the anti-wyvern pirates. He's made a valuable friend and ally in the wily Admiral of the Temple Sea Watch. Together, they track down the charismatic pirate leader, Gwain, who agrees to meet with them. However, Gwain's chosen site for their parley is a dangerous island gamepark where the stakes are high, and everyone is prey.

Warning This story includes sexual scenes and situations, which escalate over the course of the series. These books are not intended for children or young teens.

This was a *much* easier read than Embers was, mostly because I didn't have to spend half the book trying to figure out which shelt was which.

There was a lot more interaction between Gerard and Silveo - if not the quantity of interaction, than at least the quality of it. I still say that their relationship is the best part of this series. A lot of work was put into writing those two characters, and it definitely shows. Their interactions range from hilarious to heartbreaking at the drop of a colorful, multi-feathered hat. Shinies.

Gwain was also more developed as a character in this book. While you were given glimpses of him in Embers, the best look you got at him was through the book notes that opened each chapter. In Flames, he's actually a part of the story. You get to learn about where he comes from, and everything. And, of course, each chapter continues with an excerpt from his various books.

Flames had a lot more action in it than Embers did, but that's understandable. Embers had an entire world and plot to set up - it didn't have time to focus on *just* the story. It's the superhero movie problem...the second one is always better, because the first already took care of establishing who the characters are, and how the universe works. I won't judge Embers too harshly because of that...but Flames was definitely more interesting.

I want to bludgeon the way this book ended. CLIFFHANGERS...really, really badly timed cliffhangers. That was low, book. You can't just end there. You can't. There should be a law against that kind of cliffhanger. However, I already went out and bought the final three books in the series. Your cliffhangers have no power over me now, books!!! D8<

love it
This is a really top level fantasy book. It's a children book for grownups, or a grownup book for children. The world is wonderful colorful and full of different people. It's really really well written, good world creation, wonderful storyline, good characters.
This is an enjoyable series. It's very different from most that I've read. The rules and characters are uncompromising and can be absolutely evil. It definitely resembles an unabridged, adult Narnia. I love the storyline and the depth and uniqueness of the characters. I would warn you however, that it can be difficult to read if you're not a fan of explicit and disturbing subjects.
This is another excellent entry for the Guild of the Cowry Catchers! I'm not sure how to review this without falling into spoilers, but I can say it follows well into to series, reveals a few more things, deals with soem touchy topics and then leave sus in the middle of one of the most painful cliffhangers of history.
I first listened to this story as a podcast (it's for sale on Audible now) and then read it recently as an ebook when I was between library books. I love this story. I know I'm not supposed to like it when bad things happen to good people, but it's like the "Empire Strikes Back" ending where the characters hit Rock bottom and build back up.

There are no contrivances or coincidences, just solid character arcs and dire consequences. I will be reading tis book again soon - just as soon as I get through part five.
I read a lot. And I listen to a lot of audiobooks and speculative fiction podcasts while I run (a lot). But I still have a terrible tendency to buy new books faster than I read them. As a result, I have a long backlog of ebooks on my iPad, a backlog of half a dozen Audible audiobooks on my iPod and phone, and a podcatcher app full of with a few months of speculative fiction podcasts to catch up on.

So it is rare that I would reread something or, as I did with the entire Guild of the Cowry Catchers series, read the book and then listen again to the audiobook. That is the best endorsement I can provide.
This work of fiction is a highly creative epic fantasy with griffins, dragons, pegasus, satyr-like people, and other strange creatures. It includes action, mystery, and a smattering of, to me, tasteful and thoroughly appropriate romance (though, one must be patient for the delightful man-on-man parts--and if that's not your thing, you may want to stick to the first two books).
As the writer warns, there are adult situations not for the faint of heart, I.e. sex and violence, however, I found neither gratuitously inserted. In my opinion, Abigail Hilton uses these powerful images only to deepen the reader's understanding of the characters.
Also, typos and grammatical errors in novels are a pet peeve of mine and completely take me out of a book (I can't help it). 5 stars for top-notch editing as well.
The world-building is impressive as well as unique. I would go so far as to say that this series is one of my favourites and I will definitely be reading books 4 and 5. This is one of the few series that I have felt obligated to thank the author for the wonderful entertainment. Thanks, Abigail, and keep it up!
