‘A squirrel in your kitchen’ e-cookbook launched
a nostalgic voyage into the kitchen of dear friends
What do you get when you ask your dearest friends from around the world to contribute their favorite, easy to make, quick yet delicious, fail-proof recipes that are dear to their hearts? You end up with an invaluable collection of recipes, and personal anecdotes from each friend, that can be used to feed ourselves and our families, even on those hectic days when time is short.
‘A squirrel in your kitchen’, compiled and written by Mahi Solomou and designed by Lilia Larcos, is a nostalgic voyage into the kitchens and hearts of 32 girlfriends (and a male Chef friend) who live around the world - from Cyprus to Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, France, Germany, Belgium, the UK, Canada and all the way to Alaska in the USA! What do all these girlfriends have in common aside from their friendship with Mahi? They all love incredible food and yet they do not always have the time in the day to spend hours in the kitchen.
Even the Food Channel host of ‘French Food at Home’, Laura Calder (www.lauracalder.com ), one of the cookbook’s contributors doesn’t want to spend all day in the kitchen and gives us her thoughts on whipping up a delish red lentil dish- one of her top five dishes. ‘I LOVE this dish,’ Laura says. ‘Since it's vegetarian, anyone can eat it, and it has the convenience of taking only half an hour to cook.’
Mahi explains how much she treasures her friendships and how she always tries to stay in touch with dear friends around the world despite the many times she has had to relocate.
‘I wanted a creative approach to connect my girlfriends who live in various corners of the world. I thought that all these exceptional ladies may not know each other, yet they all share an affinity for food. They all want to make great food, be healthy and have fun at it! However, as we very well know, work and other priorities often come before cooking so I felt it was important to simplify life enough so that great food did not have to be compromised,’ she says, adding that she has of course shared numerous of her own recipes.
Connecting friends through food and enabling them to share their favorite recipes and tips, coupled with Mahi’s yearning to trace memories through food, epitomizes the very essence of this e-cookbook, launched in January 2013.
When Mahi was contemplating this cookbook venture, she wanted to awaken tender memories through a nostalgic voyage into the kitchen of dear friends. To ‘smell’ the coffee brewing, ‘taste’ that homemade stew and scrumptious dessert, and transfer those aromas in her kitchen, regardless how far away some friends are. She managed to collect 52 recipes which have been tried and tested from the heart, as these can add a touch of spice to any dish!
‘Why a squirrel in your kitchen?’ you may be wondering. Well, Mahi explains that she was fascinated by these little creatures from the moment she set eyes on them in Indiana, Pennsylvania! For five years, these bushy-tailed neighbors kept her pleasant company, unveiling the charming beauty and wonders of Pennsylvania. Smart and persistent, squirrels use their keen sense of smell to locate buried nuts. In this cookbook, they use their keen sense of nostalgia to locate Mahi’s friends by ‘dipping’ into kitchens around the globe.
‘The taste of savory dishes and delectable desserts reside deep in my heart, just like dear friends!’ Mahi says with a smile.

A squirrel in your kitchen eBook Mahi Solomou Lilia Larcos Reviews
We all have our one favorite "signature" recipe that we like to prepare when we invite guests. The author went around and collected this one "signature" recipe from 33 different people, so it is really a collection of the "best of the best" specialties. I like the fact that there are many different dishes like appetizers, pasta, chicken, beef, seafood, desserts and most of them are truly exceptional. A really great collection with a warm touch -highly recommended.
A beautiful collection of recipes - easy, yet delicious and with a selection of cuisines and ingredients to suit all tastes. I particularly love the way the author gives a background and story to each recipe, and the person who provided it, making it a very personal experience, and not just a regular recipe book.
No boring lists of ingredients and instructions; it's like a little collection of stories, and insights into dear friendships as well as a wonderful recipe book - makes you feel warm inside! Highly recommended.
Excellent cooking and easy to do recipes!! Way to go Mahi, the squirrel in my kitchen is awesome! Yum yum!
But I did not find a single recipe that I was even interested in trying! Perhaps I am too unsophisticated but this collection seemed very strange indeed.......I sent it straight to the Cloud. We both love to eat and cook, along with experimenting and trying new things, but nothing appealed to us here. Can't recommend, sorry.
Nice to read book, besides being a recipy book, with nice stories of the writter's friends from around the world. The recipies are very easy to make and delicious! Haven't seen anything similar up to now. I would suggest it to anyone who likes nice food but doesn't have the whole day to spend in the kitchen.
This book gives a lot of unique but easy to make recipes from around the world, along with a brief description of the authors friends and setting in which she first enjoyed many of these treats. So it's readable as a cookbook or as a biography, very enjoyable.
The author Mahi is my friend from college. I am from Turkey and She is from Cyprus. Even though our countries are set apart by politics, we became friends and our friendship became stronger by the years. When she had this project in mind, she also asked me for a recipe. She became the squirrel in my kitchen. When she came to visit me in Turkey, she brought me special olive oil cookies made by her mother especially for me. When I went to visit her in Cyprus ( against all the visa odds), I took her ekmek kadayifi and kayak, her favourite deserts. This book features friendship built by flavours...
